Because we do not receive NHS funding, we are continually trying to raise funds for the Clinic. Click here for an illustration why making a contribution is important and why finding funds for migraine research and treatment is difficult. Our annual running costs amount to over £265,000, even though two of the Clinic’s doctors give their services free. We are extremely grateful to our patients and other supporters for their generous donations which exceeded £130,000 in the 15 months to 31st March 2008.
We receive an annual grant from Migraine
Action, who also support some of our research projects. We conduct clinical
trials sponsored by pharmaceutical companies and also undertake independent
research, returning all income to the Clinic, which is a registered medical
charity. We receive donations from commercial organisations, trusts and
other donors. In addition we raise money by appeals and have a street collection
on Alexander Rose Day. However, there is still a considerable annual shortfall.

How You Can Help
Help us as a patient,
by supporting our
‘Fifty is Fair’ campaign
Through our “Fifty is Fair” campaign we encourage patients to make a minimum donation of £50 as a contribution to the costs of the Clinic. So that we can reduce the gap between the Clinic’s outgoings and incomings, the average donation needs to be brought towards at least £50.
Why are patients asked for a donation?
The Clinic values its independence highly. This independence allows us to treat our patients in the best possible way, based on experience gained over the 28 years of the Clinic’s existence. It also allows us to undertake research that we believe will be of most benefit to our patients and to the lay and medical community at large. The Clinic is not funded by the NHS or other government organisations. We keep our costs to a minimum and our senior doctors work for free. All our employed medical staff are fully qualified and of a high calibre, paid at market-based salaries. In order to ensure that we maintain the high standard of care, we feel it is appropriate to ask patients to contribute towards the actual cost of their appointment.
Why £50?
We believe that £50 is a fair contribution given that it is an amount that most people spend regularly on everyday items such as a tank of petrol, a ticket to the theatre, a dinner for two, a visit to the hairdresser’s. Hence: Fifty is Fair. However, we do recognise that this is more than some patients can afford and our continuing aim is to ensure that our services should be available to anybody who wants to come. So, we continue to emphasise that it is a voluntary donation and appreciate any contribution, small or large towards the Clinic.
How about other fundraising efforts?
The Clinic continues to work hard to raise funds in many other ways. We develop other initiatives to raise funds from charitable foundations, corporations and other sources. We also generate some income through research grants and by treating patients privately. In addition, our network of regular supporters is increasingly important. So if you value our cause, please consider making a donation in any of the ways suggested below.
Many thanks in advance, on behalf of the Clinic’s patients.

Help us by making a regular donation
Giving regularly, for instance by a monthly Direct Debit, enables
the Clinic to budget for the future. Just £5 a month means £60
a year for you but with the addition of Gift Aid (see below), the Clinic will receive
nearly £77. Please print out, complete and send us the Direct Debit
or Standing Order form, using the Freepost address above.

Help us by ‘Gift Aiding’ your donation
Under the Government's Gift Aid scheme, the Clinic can reclaim tax on the donations made by UK taxpayers. Your donation will qualify if you pay 25p UK income tax and/or capital gains tax for each £1 you have donated, in the tax year. The Government will add an extra 3p, so that the charity will receive 28p for each £1 donated under Gift Aid.
Please date and sign the Gift Aid Declaration on the Donation Form, if you want the charity to treat all donations you have made for this tax year and the six years prior to the year of this declaration, and all donations you make from the date of this declaration until you notify us otherwise, as Gift Aid donations.
If you are a higher rate taxpayer and declare your donations on your tax
returns, you can claim a further rebate on the difference between higher rate and
basic rate tax.
Help us by promoting the Clinic
Please tell your family and friends what the Clinic does and how many
people it helps and supports. Goodwill inevitably generates more income.
Help us by organising a simple event
Host a coffee morning, a barbecue, or a car boot sale, do a sponsored
swim, or encourage a friend to run in a marathon and obtain sponsorship. These
are very cost-effective ways to raise funds. If you want to discuss fundraising
through holding an event, or obtain a sponsorship form, please get in touch
with our Fundraising Administrator, Chris Gear on 020 7251 3322, and she will
be happy to give you advice.
Help us by leaving a legacy
Consider asking your solicitor to add The City of London Migraine
Clinic as a beneficiary of your will. Most charities raise at least 50% of
their income from legacies. Please get in touch with Chris Gear on 020 7251
3322, for further information or download a legacy leaflet. Link

Help us by signing up with your employer to Give As You Earn
Give As You Earn, the UK's largest and most successful
payroll giving scheme, is administered by CAF (Charities Aid Foundation).
If you are an employee or pensioner paid under PAYE you can donate to any
charitable organisation directly from payroll. You can give as much as you
like and donations are tax free. For further information see www.cafonline.org/default.aspx?page=7026
Help us with your own our ideas
If you have any suggestions about how we might
raise funds, including who we might approach, please get in touch with Chris
Gear on 020 7251 3322.
